Inspired Home: The Kitchen is Getting Warmer

If you’ve been saving kitchen inspiration lately, you may have noticed something: kitchens are getting warmer.

After years of cool grays and bright white cabinets, homeowners are gravitating toward softer colors, natural materials, and more relaxed spaces. And at Holliday Homes, we’ve been noticing that shift in our own homes here in Davidson.

As a custom homebuilder, we’re fortunate to have the opportunity to make thoughtful design decisions from one home to the next. In the final phase of Davidson Springs, a small collection of just six homes along the same street, we incorporated many of the warmer, more natural elements we’re seeing become increasingly popular in kitchen design.

Those homes featured softer cabinet colors, natural wood tones, organic materials, and finishes that felt comfortable and timeless rather than overly polished. The result was a kitchen palette that felt especially fitting for Davidson—and one that we’re excited to carry forward into our upcoming homes.

We’re calling it the modern organic kitchen: clean and contemporary, but balanced with warm wood tones, natural stone, soft neutrals, and plenty of texture.

Here are a few of the kitchen design elements we’re especially excited about.

Warm Neutrals Are Replacing Stark Whites

White kitchens aren’t going anywhere, but they are getting warmer. Instead of bright, stark white, we’re seeing more interest in creamy whites, soft beige, warm taupe, mushroom, sand, and other earthy neutrals. These colors still give a kitchen that light and airy feeling, but they create a softer backdrop for the rest of the home.

This is a direction we embraced in the final phase of Davidson Springs. We used warmer, softer cabinet colors that paired beautifully with natural materials and added a little more depth and character to the kitchens.

A creamy cabinet color can work beautifully with natural oak, a warm stone countertop, brushed brass or bronze hardware, or even a subtle earthy accent color. The result feels sophisticated without feeling overly formal.

Natural Wood Is Having a Big Moment

One of the biggest changes we’re seeing—and one we’ve embraced in our own designs—is a renewed appreciation for natural wood. White oak, in particular, continues to be a favorite because it brings warmth and texture while still feeling light and modern.

There’s something about natural wood that makes a kitchen feel grounded. It also gives us as builders and designers so much flexibility. A simple oak island can add warmth to an otherwise neutral kitchen, while wood cabinetry throughout can create a more enveloping, traditional feel.

Natural wood was one of the elements we incorporated into the final Davidson Springs homes, and it’s a look we plan to continue exploring in our upcoming designs.

Kitchens Are Feeling More Comfortable

For a while, kitchen design seemed focused on creating the most perfectly polished space possible. Now, we’re seeing more homeowners ask for kitchens that actually feel comfortable and lived in. It’s where you make coffee in the morning, help with homework, entertain friends, and linger around the island long after dinner is over.

That might mean a furniture-style island, a beautiful wood range hood, open shelving for a few favorite pieces, or a combination of cabinet finishes. It can also be as simple as choosing materials with natural variation instead of finishes that look perfectly uniform.

For us, the goal has never been to create a kitchen that looks like everyone else’s. It’s to create a kitchen that works for the family who will live there and feels like it belongs in the home.

Natural Stone Is Becoming a Feature

We’re big fans of beautiful countertops, and natural stone is getting more attention as homeowners look for materials with character. Instead of choosing something completely uniform, our homeowners are embracing natural variation—veining, movement, and subtle changes in color.

We love the way a full-height stone backsplash can transform a kitchen. It gives the stone room to become part of the architecture of the space rather than just functioning as a countertop material. Or pair natural oak with a softly veined quartzite or marble, and you have a combination that feels sophisticated without feeling overly formal.

That balance is something we’re continuing to explore as we design our upcoming Holliday Homes in both The Estates at Davidson Farms and The Preserve at Summit Farms.

Texture Is Just as Important as Color

When your kitchen palette is made up of creams, tans and warm wood, texture becomes especially important. Natural wood grain, honed or textured stone, handmade-look tile, plaster-inspired range hoods, fluted or reeded details, and brushed metals can all add interest to the space. It’s all about layering different materials and finishes so the kitchen feels warm and dimensional rather than flat.

For a modern organic kitchen, think Wood + Stone + Warm Metal. Imagine natural oak cabinetry paired with a creamy stone island and understated bronze hardware, or a warm white kitchen with a walnut island and softly veined countertops. None of the individual elements has to be dramatic. When they’re thoughtfully combined, they create a kitchen that feels collected, comfortable, and timeless.

What We’re Bringing to Our Next Davidson Homes

The final phase of Davidson Springs gave us an opportunity to incorporate warmer, more natural kitchen elements. Those homes helped reinforce how well this softer palette works in a home—calm and inviting. We plan to carry those same ideas forward into our upcoming homes.

At The Estates at Davidson Farms, Holliday Homes will be building three new custom homes on 2+ acre lots, and we’re already thinking about how these ideas will translate into those kitchens. Expect to see more natural wood, warm neutrals, beautiful stone, and layered textures that feel both organic and comfortable.

We’re also excited to bring this design approach to The Preserve at Summit Farms in Davidson.

We’re proud to be one of just five custom homebuilders selected to build in this 60-acre agrihood, a community centered around a working farm, wellness, and connection to nature. With six lots to build on, we’re sure to see a lot of the warmer wood tones, natural stone, and soft neutral palettes that feel particularly appropriate in a community designed around natural living.
